Where the bloody hell are you?
Tourism Australia launched it’s bloody good new campaign to much fanfare (see the tv ad here). It’s a bloody good ad that presents the aussie people as warm inviting people who are laid back bloody and inviting.
Unfortunately the UK doesn’t like it and until last week had banned it from airing over there. They said that it was ‘too offensive’ to be screened because the tag line for the ad is: “where the bloody hell are you?”
This seems a little pretentious coming from the country that spawned this saying. It’s not even considered a bloody swear word. It’s used to emphasise something like:
a) that’s a good meal.
b) That’s a bloody good meal
See?
It’s a bit hypocritical to ban it because of the word “bloody” since they allowed it to be used by the star of harry potter in his last movie.
It’s part of the aussie vernacular especially in ads, where we’ve seen it used for drink driving: “drink and drive and you’re a bloody idiot” and a range of other ads and it’s even said in parliament house by our politicians.
So to all those winging poms out there, you should bloody well stop being such sooks and go practice playing cricket or drinking tea or something.

I love this, and we’ve had it for a few weeks since we are overseas. And of course, here in Newzild, bloody is in the same usage as in Australia, so I never noticed if it was used. Got the feeling it isn’t as the last line just seems unfamiliar—then again, with a girl that pretty, I wasn’t exactly listening. (She may well have been saying, ‘Oi, my face is up here, you bloody perv.’)
Might have to watch closely tonight, as the Tourism Board is spending a bloody big sum on the campaign here. Bloody big. Mate.
Update: it is indeed in our TVCs, as expected. (Blogged about it as well, Markoos, with a hat tip to you.)
many thanks.
it's an advertisers dream to have so much talk about a campaign. you can't buy that kind of media coverage... well you can, but this is a whole lot cheaper and people actually take notice of it when it's in the news.
