MT HOTHAM - Payback!

I shared a lift chair with a cranky old duck that complained about pretty much everything the entire way to the top. It was either too cold or the lift passes were too expensive. Then she started to tell us how this was the worst snow season since 1973. I looked around at the white blanket that covered the mountain as rays of sunlight glistened off it making me screw up my eyes. I couldn’t understand how someone could be so unhappy while they were surrounded by this amazing sight. It looked pretty good to me.

Then as we neared the top, snow started to fall gently from the massive low-lying white clouds that seemed to snag on the mountain. I felt that rush again. I’d never seen it snow before. I was cranking my neck around, giggling and jockeying for a better view of the falling flakes from all angles with such force that I’m sure I was nearly about to shake the chair off the cable.

the first time i've ever seen snow fall

“it’s not even real snow” the old bag next to me croaked. “it’s more like ice or sleet”.

Why did she insist on ruining this for me? I thought as I sat there with my mouth open, catching the ice-snow-sleet in my mouth.

We arrived at the top of the mountain and everyone got ready to make the jump off. My heart was beating fast as I lifted the bar over my head and straightened my snowboard. This was only the 4th time I’d done this and of that, I’d only managed not to fall over once.

As we all jumped off the seat and slid down the ice ramp I gave the old bag a little push and sent her careering out of control over the edge. “oops! Beginner, sorry!” I shouted as I managed to stay upright and boarded off.
