food appreciation

One of the things I like about working at the fruit shop is the Italian culture you get immersed in.

I was reflecting on this rich culture while we were all out the back sitting around having lunch one day. The old Italian boss was opening a san Pellegrino chinotto bottle when I asked him about it. He started to explain that it was a type of aperitif that they drank in Italy before meals to help build appetite.

I looked at him with a puzzling look so he went on to tell me that I wouldn’t understand because Italians had a better appreciation food and Australians only ate crappy bland food and wouldn’t know good food if it bit them on their asino.

I thought about this while we sat there and I watched him bite into a four and twenty pie with extra tomato sauce.
